Susan Resler Obituary

Susan “Susie” Resler, age 64, passed away at home in comfort and peace, surrounded by her husband and children, on Monday, May 29, 2023.

Susie was born December 7, 1958 in Alexandria, Virginia to Philip and Dot Browning. She was the youngest of seven kids and is survived by her adoring siblings: Nod, Liz, Judy, Mary, Robert, and John. At age three, she moved with her family to France where she continued to grow up in Europe for the remainder of her childhood and early adulthood. It was at her high school in Bitburg, Germany, that she first met the love of her life, David Resler. They remained close friends for many years and shortly after her return to the United States, they were wed September 1, 1984. Susie and Dave were a devoted pair and shared a beautiful marriage for 38 years. They lived and traveled all over the world and set their roots in Delaware.

Susie’s light continues in her five children: Chris (Larkin), Jay (Lindsay), Kelli (Stephen), Nick (Frankie), and Steph (Kevin), and her four grandchildren: Skye, Riley, Levi, and Lily.

Susie was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s disease and despite the difficulty of losing her mobility and the ability to enjoy her passions, she continued to fight for many years with a level of strength and determination that continually amazed all who knew her.

Susie had the patience of a saint, especially while waiting with all her children in the van for her husband to finish vacuuming the house before leaving on a road-trip; or waiting for her bowl of orange swirl ice cream to be served.

Susie loved freely and honestly, she never shied from telling you exactly how she felt. Her sass was legendary. Susie laughed openly and deeply; her joy filled the room, the adjacent room, and the whole house.

Susie could be found on any given summer day with a glass of wine-or perhaps a daiquiri-in hand, sitting at the poolside or on the beach or by the lake. Those were her favorite moments, sunbathing in a lounge chair with a friend and her romance novels.

Above all, Susie was unequivocally the most giving wife, mother and friend. Even to the end, Susie put others above herself. She refused to eat until she was certain that everyone had a plateful of food. She would insist that everyone at the table have a bowl of ice cream with her. She put the comfort of others ahead of her own, offering her wheelchair to anyone who needed a seat despite not being able to stand on her own. She was so giving and selfless.

Susie’s love for her family and friends was equaled only by her love for ice cream and Spain. She was a voracious reader of romance novels. Her favorite hobby was sewing and she even started her own ‘Stitch ‘n Bitch’ knitting group. She was incredibly talented and leaves behind an impressive multitude of quilts, baby clothes, embroidery patterns, etc.

Spending her childhood and most of her young adulthood in France and Spain, she was trilingual; speaking English, French, and Spanish. She loved to travel and shared this passion with her children.

Susie is undoubtedly in heaven, with the RV of her dreams full of puppies, trekking the cosmos, all the while keeping a watchful eye on all the ones she loved so dearly.

Happy trails, Bon voyage, Buen viaje, Susie, your light continues to shine bright in all of us. We will never forget your devotion and strength and kindness.

We love you,

Dave, Chris, Jay, Kelli, Nick, Steph.
