Margaret Carney Obituary

Margaret M.  (Carr) Carney, age 94, went to heaven on Valentine’s Day to celebrate with the love of her life, her husband, Jack.

Margaret will forever be remembered by her daughters and her son-in-law, Margaret M. Williams, Jeanmarie and Kevin Maloney, and Catherine Brady, as well as her fur baby, Travis.  She leaves behind ten grandchildren, Kimberly (Chad), Michael (Christina), Kevin, Patrick (Lori), Tara (Adam), Jay (Andrea), Erin, Kelsey, John (Amber), Maria (Matt).  She will be lovingly remembered by her 14 great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Nathan, Emily, Mia, Ava, Kevin, Bruce, Cole, Caimbria, Jack, Kinslea, Olivia, John, and Jordan.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Catherine Carr; her sisters, Marie Carr, Catherine Figun, Cecilia Conway; her son-in-law, Michael J. Williams Sr.; and her sister-in-law, Mary McGovern. She also leaves a host of nieces and nephews who she always loved and enjoyed.

Margaret loved the beach, especially Longport, New Jersey, where they had a vacation home for several years. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband which included several cruises. Her favorite was the one to Alaska. But she loved nothing more than going back to her ancestral country, Ireland. She enjoyed bowling and participated in a ladies’ league for many years.  She was also blessed with a beautiful singing voice which she celebrated as a member of St. Elizabeth's choir and as a soloist at many special sacramental celebrations throughout the diocese.

She was an avid fan of General Hospital and did not accept phone calls from 3PM to 4PM during the week. She loved playing basketball while in school and coached the St. Elizabeth's girls’ basketball team for several seasons. She loved watching sports especially basketball and football. She avidly cheered for the Eagles and Sixers whenever they played!

Above all else, her family was her most cherished treasure from the oldest to the very youngest. Margaret loved to be surrounded by her boisterous, entertaining brood who counted on her witticisms to make the events memorable.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Monday, February 22 from 5:00-7:00PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church, Cedar and Clayton Streets, Wilmington on Tuesday, February 23 at 11:00AM, followed by interment at Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that Memorial Donations be made either to the Benedictine Sisters at St. Gertrude Monastery, 25 Gender Road, Newark, DE 19713 who were dear to her heart, or to the Delaware SPCA, 455 Stanton Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713 (https://www.delspca.org/tribute-gifts/) where she adopted her baby, Travis.
