Joseph Thomas Maciey Jr., age 70, passed away on May 5, 2023. Born and raised in Wilmington, DE, Joe was the son of the late Joseph T. Maciey Sr. and Angela DeLuca Maciey.
Joseph dedicated much of his life to St. Anthony of Padua Parish where he served as an altar boy and learned to say the Latin Mass prayers. He helped build St. Anthony’s in the Hills Day Camp as a CYO member and later became CYO President at St. Helena’s Parish.
A 1970 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, Joe went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Delaware in 1974. He was an accomplished athlete in many sports including wrestling, gymnastics, archery, and bowling.
In 1975, he married Pamela Gilkerson Maciey and they were blessed with two sons. Joe was a loving and dedicated father who patiently coached little league, enthusiastically attended all the sporting endeavors of his sons, and many years later, those of his grandchildren. Joe worked for MBNA and was a member of the Delaware Carpenters Union. He was a skilled carpenter, painter and rosary maker, which he enjoyed gifting to loved ones. After retirement, he donated his time and talents on mission trips to other countries and enjoyed teaching carpentry. Joe also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and remodeled homes.
Joe had a heart of gold, a beaming smile and was loved by many. He was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Cathy and Tony Leounes; his nephew, Andrew Maciey; and cousin, Harold “Sonny” Hendrickson Jr.
He is survived by his sons, Joseph Maciey III (Adriana) and Jasen Maciey (Pam); grandchildren, Karalena Maciey, Annika Maciey, Jasen Maciey, Jr, and Braxton Maciey; his brothers, Anthony Maciey, Michael Maciey (Michele); and sister, Donna Thomson (Joe) and their families.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30am on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 9:30am. Interment for Joe will be held privately.
