John “Jack” Long, 90, of Newark, Delaware passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 14, 2020. Born in Wilmington on January 8, 1930, he was the youngest of seven children of the late William and Della (Schlief) Long.
Jack proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was employed with the former Diamond State Telephone Company (Verizon) for 32 years, having retired in 1985, and thoroughly enjoyed his second career with the Red Clay Consolidated School District. In younger years, he was a member of the Blue Rock Drum and Bugle Corps. An avid gardener, Jack took great pride in the care of his yard and home. He also enjoyed cheering for his grandchildren at their sporting events.
His beloved wife of 65 years, Dolores “Dolly” (Matyniak) Long passed away on November 11, 2018. Sadly, Jack was also predeceased by his son, David J. Long; his daughter, Jacqueline Long; his granddaughter, Kelly Stellfox; his siblings.
Jack is survived by his daughters, Suzanne J. Stellfox (Jeff) and Nadine M. Jaquette; his grandchildren, Michael Long, Jeffrey Stellfox and Andrew Stellfox; his great grandchildren, Dustin and Nathan Long, and Phoenix Stellfox.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Delaware Hospice for the compassion and care given to Jack.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Tuesday, January 21 from 10:00-11:00AM. Funeral services will begin at 11:00AM, immediately followed by entombment in All Saints Cemetery.
