Fred W. Long

Deputy Chief Emeritus Fred W. Long of the Hockessin Fire Company passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on Wednesday, October 21, 2020.  Born in Honey Brook Township, Pennsylvania on August 7, 1940, he was the son of the late Oliver and Elizabeth (Hall) Long.

Fred was a dedicated and active member of the Hockessin Fire Company for more than 60 years, having served as First Assistant Chief Engineer, Chief Engineer and First Assistant Chief.  In 1986, the position of Deputy Chief was created and Fred dutifully served in that position for twenty years.  Upon his stepping down as Deputy Chief, the title of Deputy Chief Emeritus was promptly bestowed upon him.  In addition to his service as an active firefighter and officer, Fred served on the Board of Trustees, the Sunshine Committee, as well as numerous other committees.

Fred was proud of his career as the full-time custodian at the Hockessin Memorial Hall.  He was hired in 1971 and continued in that role until his passing.  Fred gladly handled every aspect of the operation of the hall:  cleaning and maintenance, setting up and taking down after events, as well as food preparation and cooking in the early years.

In his minimal leisure time, Fred enjoyed trying his luck at the Delaware Park slots and listening to country music.

All are welcome to honor Fred at the Hockessin Memorial Hall, 610 Yorklyn Road, Hockessin on Wednesday, October 28.  A viewing will take place from 9:30-11:00AM, with funeral services beginning at 11:00AM.  Interment will immediately follow in Hockessin Friends Cemetery, 1501 Old Wilmington Road, Hockessin.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Fred may be made to the Hockessin Fire Company, 1225 Old Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707.
