David W. “Gampy” Bender, age 80, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 12, 2018.
Born on January 13, 1938 in Wilmington, David was the son of the late Erwin and Florence Bender. He was a graduate of Wilmington High School Class of 1955. David was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. After his military service, he began his career as a frameman with Bell Telephone. David continued with Diamond State Telephone, eventually retiring as an engineer from Verizon. He was member of the Diamond State Telephone Pioneers.
David was an accomplished musician with the French horn. He was a member of the First State Symphonic Band, as well as the New Castle County Community Band. David was an avid bowler, softball player and weightlifter. In his leisure time, he was an avid Eagles and Nascar fan. David also enjoyed metal detecting for treasures. David was a very caring and devoted family man. He will be remembered for his ornery, fun loving spirit, as well as his intelligence.
David was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Patricia A. (Burke) Bender; his parents and his brothers, Paul and Robert Bender. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah A. Pouser, and her husband, Wayne; his grandchildren, Amanda Coates, and her husband, Danny, and Karlee Pouser; his great grandchildren, Daniel, Jr., Lena and Allie; his sister, Ruth Whitt; as well as many nieces and nephews. David will be dearly missed by his two loving cats, Sophie and Susie.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Joe, Dave’s caregiver; Debbie, his nurse from Heartland Hospice; as well as their many friends for all of their love, care and support.
Family and friends may visit on Sunday, May 20 from 2 to 4 PM at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808. A Celebration of David’s Life will be held at 11 AM on Monday, May 21 at the funeral home. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
