Charles "Chuck" Albert Johnson, Jr.

Charles Albert “Chuck” Johnson, Jr., age 64, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 15, 2018.

Born in Wilmington, Chuck was the son of the late Charles and Helen (McGonigle) Johnson. He grew up in the Forty Acres and Rockford sections of Wilmington, where he graduated from Wilmington High School. For 24 years, Chuck was a supervisor at Wilmington Finishing Co. until its closing. Then, he was the caretaker at the Craven Estate for several years. Chuck was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Newport.

Family was the center of Chuck’s world, who he cherished spending time with. He deeply loved sharing his wonderful memories of growing up in Wilmington with his children and grandson. Chuck was an avid Phillies fan and loved watching the Phillies with his son, Eric. He also spent time talking about movies and music with his daughter, Lydia. Chuck’s specialty was making breakfast for the whole family. Chuck will be dearly missed by his loving family.

Chuck treasured all of the holidays with his family, especially Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. He loved decorating for the holidays, which his house won awards for in Newport. In his leisure time, Chuck was a classic car enthusiast and enjoyed watching all the car shows, as well as old movies, especially Clint Eastwood and John Wayne movies.

Chuck is survived by his wife of 24 years, Elizabeth C. (Roche) Johnson; his son, Eric P. Johnson; his daughter, Lydia B. Johnson; his grandson, Christopher D. Johnson, who was his best buddy. He is also survived by his three sisters, Margie May, Jeanette Crowley, and Fran Johnson; his sister-in-law, Wendy Johnson; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Chuck was predeceased by his parents; his brother, William C. Johnson; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Patrick and Margaret Roche, whom he all adored.

Family and friends may visit from 10 to 11:30 AM on Thursday, August 23 at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808, where a Celebration of Chuck's Life will begin at 11:30 AM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
