John F. Sarnecky, Jr.

 John F, Sarnecky, Jr., age 96, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 7, 2019.

Born in Perth Amboy, NJ on March 3, 1922, he was a son of the late John F. and Emily (Kovalsky) Sarnecky, Sr. John proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1946. After his service, John earned his degree in Accounting from Rider University. In 1949 he married his one love, Elvira Meszaros and in 1951 moved to Delaware and worked at E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company in Wilmington, retiring after 34 of dedicated years.

John was a longtime and dedicated member of St. Matthew R.C Church and The Cathedral of St. Peter, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and Usher.  John was a longtime volunteer for The Wilmington Opera Society (predecessor of Opera Delaware), helping with his sons in set construction and taking on minor non-speaking roles.  After his retirement, John and Elvira became world travelers, visiting many parts of the USA (where ever an Elder Hostel might be held or a son currently residing) and most of Europe, with their fondest memories of England and Ireland. 

Above all, John will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who had a great sense of humor and was dedicated to his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Michael and Jack.  John is survived by his loving wife, Elvira; his daughters, Andrea Darone (David) of Middletown, DE and Judith Murphy (Matthew) of Newark, DE; his daughter-in-law, Kathryn of Newark, DE; his sons, Kenneth (Cathy) of Henderson, NV, Joseph (Lida) of Ponte Vedra, FL, Thomas (Kathy) of Bear, DE, and Jeff (Ann) of Odenton, MD; fifteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:00AM until 10:00AM on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at The Cathedral of St. Peter, 500 N. West Street, Wilmington, DE 19801, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00AM. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John's memory to The Cathedral of St. Peter.
