Katherine Seitz Obituary

Katherine “Kathy” Mary Seitz passed away peacefully on April 20, 2024 in the presence of family after suffering injuries from a fall at home. She was 80.

Katherine was born in Savannah, Georgia while her father was stationed there with the Army.  A graduate of Padua Academy and the University of Delaware where she also received her Master’s Degree, Kathy was a long-time English teacher in the Brandywine School District, primarily at Mount Pleasant High School where she was also Chair of the English Department. Teaching was not a career but a joy in her life as she encouraged dynamic exchanges of ideas in the classroom with her students. More importantly, she always enjoyed learning of the many successes earned by her former students.

Kathy was an avid traveler and reader. Summer was always a favorite season as she had ample opportunity to travel extensively throughout the United States and Europe and to catch up on her personal reading backlog and to read book recommendations of her friends. In later years, her travel turned to Caribbean cruises and day-long bus trips with friends to see Broadway shows and art museums. No matter what the destination, Kathy always looked forward to new adventures. During the school year, Kathy enjoyed attending the various athletic competitions of her nieces and nephews as she took great pride in their accomplishments.

Regular gatherings with her long-time friends and classmates from Padua Academy were always special occasions as they would reminisce about their high school days and update each other on their current life events, and, they always had interesting insights to share with each other. Kathy also enjoyed actively participating in the AAUW Delaware Branch where she made many good friendships and took many interesting classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Delaware. In her spare time, she enjoyed gardening at home by planting colorful summer flowers.

The daughter of the late Colonel George Hilary Seitz Jr. and Katherine Sullivan Seitz, Katherine was preceded in death by her brothers, George H. Seitz and Charles F. Seitz. She is survived by her brothers, John S. Seitz of Stone Mountain, Georgia, and his wife Nancy and their children, Mary, Katherine and her husband, Gregory, and Margaret and her husband, Michael; Paul C. Seitz and his wife Joanne and their children, Stephanie and Courtney, all of Wilmington; and, her sister-in-law, Kathleen Seitz (the surviving spouse of George) and their children, Bryan and his wife, Rachel, and Hilary and her husband, Derek, as well as many grand nieces and nephews.
