Dorothy (Dot) E. Doody, age 88, of Wilmington, DE passed away on May 31, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family.
Born in Rockland, DE, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Mary (Solka) McCracken.
She was a talented homemaker and enjoyed decorating her home, easily creating stylish rooms from many inspirations. Artistic and never idle, she always had a project, mastering quilting, crochet, embroidery and oil painting just to name a few. A country girl at heart, she had a special gift for gardening and loved spending time in her award winning backyard, named Hannah’s Garden, for her grandmother.
Some of her many interests included cheering for her favorite team, the Phillies, jigsaw puzzles and birdwatching. In her earlier years she enjoyed camping, fishing, and was once a member of Winterthur’s bowling league. Happy and fun loving, she found humor in any situation; she also had an ornery streak and loved a good practical joke.
She married Carl Doody, the love of her life, in 1953 and raised six children. A devout catholic she volunteered for St. Ann’s Chapel, while her health provided for it.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Carl, her brother, Richard McCracken, and sister in law, Doris McCracken. She is survived by her daughters, Betsy (Carl), Diane (Larry), Maureen (Andrew) and her sons, David, Robin, and Eddie. She also leaves behind six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, one more expected in August.
Her oldest son, David, was her devoted caregiver in her recent years, making certain all her needs and whims were always met.
Friends and family are invited to visit on Friday, June 5th, 2020 from 11-12pm at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808. Interment will follow at Silverbrook Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Dot’s name may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 185 Salem Church Rd., Newark, DE19713 and/or St. Ann’s School Fund, 2006 Shallcross Ave., Wilmington, DE 19806.
