I little late, but I was a teaching assistant at Cornell along with Steve and Paul Carubia. We were the 3 assistants in the environmental engineering deptartment. Year was 1977-78. I am at a reflecting age and remembered him fondly as in "I wonder what Steve Dentel is doing?"
Although I am reminded of what I could have done, I'm happy he had a nice career. I remember him exactly as the obit states....smart, quirky & funny, caring, motivated & altruistic. He deserved it all.
Sincerely,
John Zappe

I am shocked and saddened to discover this. Steve and I were friends in elementary school and classmates in college. We only corresponded a few times after college, but this is sad news, indeed.

My deepest sympathy for your loss.
Steve was my academic advisor and a mentor (graduated 2010), a true person of character that I will always look up to. The fact that he is no longer with us make me deeply sad, I will always miss him. I am, however, grateful that I had a chance to meet him and he will continue to inspire me throughout my lifetime.

I met Steve in 1985 after enrolling in one his graduate courses. I was neither an engineer nor had any experience in wastewater treatment, but was looking for a challenge and the course content was interesting. While other professors may have dissuaded me from continuing Steve took my deficiencies as a challenge. He stayed after class and offered extended office hours to assist me, but more importantly he showed me compassion, understanding and patience. I enjoyed the experience so much that I took another one of Steve’s courses. I have never forgotten how great a teacher he was and I am truly grateful for having the chance to meet and share time with him. May peace be with his family.

Steve was a well-known and well-respected leader in our field. His work on sludge conditioning and dewatering as well as the application of colloid and interface science to sludge treatment processes has shaped the direction of research and resulted in some of the landmark articles that withstood the test of time. He had a good heart and a great sense of humour. We will miss you Steve.

The world is certainly a better place because of Steve Dentel. Not only did his work in environmental engineering benefit humanity, but his life as a good man benefitted those around him. He helped us adopt our two beautiful children. He helped us keep our wonderful neighborhood vibrant, secure, and lovely. He was a man of beliefs who practiced what he preached. And very importantly, he lived his life with humor and patience. We miss his Santa Claus in the VW bus.
He will be missed. Our thoughts are with Carol, Colin, Aaron and their families.

Dear Carol, Aaron and Colin,
Steve was a great gift - a brilliant, funny, caring person who truly made a difference with the gifts he was given. His leadership at UD, in Newark, and around the world through EWB made a great impact. Thank you for sharing him with us! Know that he will be remembered, and that you are in my prayers.
In sympathy,

On two occasions, Dr. Steve and his Engineers Without Borders students spoke to the Osher Lifelong Learning Current Issues class about their projects. Our class was very impressed with the work Dr. Steve and the students did and marveled at their ingenuity and commitment to providing potable water to people in Cameroon. We were sorry to learn the sad news of Dr. Steve's passing. His humor and scientific acumen will be missed.

Dr. Dentel was a great professor and a very kind man. I did my masters degrees at UD Civil Engineering (1992) and he was always a spark of intellect and conversation while being completely accessible.
Rest in peace Dr. Steve.......you touched many hearts and brains.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I was lucky enough to know Steve for 27 years. Over those 27 years he played many roles in my life. He served as my undergraduate professor, graduate advisor, industry colleague, friend, and in recent years, mentor to our son. He was a great man who will be missed by all, but forgotten by none.

Dear Dentel Family,
My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. I am so terribly sorry for your loss of Steven. May you be consoled by the love, care, and prayers of all those around you! What profound impact it has on us when we see our loved one battling with illness and the strength that comes from within to continue living as long as possible. I personally find comfort in Gods promise of the time when sickness will be no more, Isaiah 33:24. May you be reunited with your loved one soon in paradise when such tragedies will be a thing of the past, Revelation 21:3-5! May you, also, in time find comfort in Stevens cherished memories, and strength in the companionship of the life you shared together!
With deep sorrow,
The Munro Family
