Richard G. Sobala, 64 of East Windsor, NJ, passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 after fiercely fighting leukemia for five months.

Richard was born in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late John and Catherine Sobala. In 1985, he settled down in East Windsor to start a family with his new wife. He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, Brooklyn College, and New York University, where he earned an MBA. Throughout his career, he held high-level positions at financial institutions before ultimately retiring.

In younger years, Richard enjoyed playing tennis, amateur photography, and collecting baseball memorabilia. More recently, he enjoyed spending time in Delaware with his new grandson.

Richard is survived by his wife of 33 years, Nancy Byrne; his son, Richard J. Sobala and wife, Katie (Kaminski) of Hockessin; his daughter Stephanie J. Sobala of Wilmington; his loving grandson, Nicholas; and his brother, John Sobala and wife, Mary Jo of East Windsor, NJ.

A viewing will be held for family and friends on Tuesday, May 2 from 5:00-7:00PM at the Doherty Funeral Home located at 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 3 at 10:30AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Church located at 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707 with entombment following in Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Richard may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 100 W. 10th St., #209, Wilm, DE 19801 (www.lls.org), and the Blood Bank of Delmarva, 100 Hygeia Dr., Newark, DE 19713 (www.delmarvablood.org).
