Leonard Rakowski of Newark peacefully passed away on Monday, September 19, 2016 at the age of 91.
Mr. Rakowski was born in Nanticoke, PA on August 26, 1925, son of the late Andrew and Victoria (Gozdziaszek) Rakowski. A veteran of the United States Army Air Corps, he proudly served our country during World War II. He was employed with General Motors for 40 years, retiring in 1990, and was also employed part time with Acme Markets for 30 years, having worked at the Wilmington Manor and Prices Corner stores.
Mr. Rakowski was a very talented “do it yourselfer” and could create anything out of nothing. He took great pride in the care of his property, especially his lawn. An avid Phillies and Eagles fan, he played semi-pro baseball during his youth in Nanticoke. Mr. Rakowski was a faithful member of Parish of the Resurrection.
His wife of 47 years, Beatrice (Chrzan) Rakowski, passed away on October 18, 1998.
Mr. Rakowski is survived by his children, Alice Rakowski, Mark Rakowski and wife, Sharon, and Nan Reider and husband, Michael; and his grandchildren, Kaitlyn Rakowski, and Zachary, Adam and Sarah Reider.
He was predeceased by his brother, John Rakofski; and his sister, Valentine McGrath.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Sunday, September 25 from 2:00-4:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Parish of the Resurrection, 3000 Videre Drive, Skyline Ridge, Wilmington on Monday, September 26 at 10:00AM. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
