John's passing is a great loss to journalism and public life. What will be harder for me to accommodate is the quiet wisdom with which he conducted his friendships. I'll remember his way of saying, "So long" -- he often said "Be well." And one knew that he meant "well" in all respects -- healthy of mind and body, successful and content, productive and of good cheer. That's the kind of generous spirit he exuded.

I met him Three years algo or so. He seemed to me a happy person, all the time smiling and trying to make people to have fun. He told us stories and anecdotes. I agree with some of the statements of the obituary, in fact, cooked for him in some of the events he always was pleased to go. And he was also curious when i was cooking Spanish food. I really lament the loss and it will be strange to go this year again to USA without seeing him. Love for the family

it was a pleasure to know and travel with John. With all the accolades that he has received, to me, his greatest achievement was as father to four wonderful children
Sincerely, Bill and Joan Moore

Dearest Maria and Family, You were all so supportive of me when I "lost" my husband in an awful divorce, and I cannot be there with you now, and at a time infinitely far worse, and I am so so sorry. Maria, I have been wanting to contact you for ages, and I am so sorry this is the occasion that brings me to contact you. So so sorry. I cannot imagine what you are going through. My prayers and thoughts are with all of you. I loved John. I cannot believe he is gone.

John was one of the first students admitted to the MALS Program and I had the pleasure of having him in a seminar i conducted for the Program. He was a delight--smart, funny, intellectually adventurous and, needless to say, a fine writer. Working with him is one of my happy memories from that Program

Dearest Maria,

I was so shocked and distressed to read about John. You must be beside yourself. My heart goes out to you. What a great man he was and what a moving force in our community he was! You have been an amazing couple.

Let others spoil you at this time. You have been so comforting to so many others in their times of trouble. Sadly, it is your time to be comforted now. Please let me know if there is anything you need.

With great affection,
Barbara

Maria, I know it's hard to understand why people are taken from us, but find comfort in knowing you were a special part of such a well-lived life.

Very sorry about John's passing. We were classmates at Sallies and I followed his career from afar in the online NewsJournal. Rest in peace, John.

I met John in 2009 through a business organization. Not being from Delaware, I did not initially know about John's work and his legacy, but it was easy to see that everyone looked to him with respect. I admired his sharp analysis, wit, kindness and caring. John always had a smile and he always took the time to explain what he was thinking. My sincere condolences on the loss of a wonderful man.
