James G. Harrington, 87 of Wilmington, passed away at home on Tuesday, October 18, 2016, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born and raised in Wilmington, son of the late Earl and Ethel (Greenwood) Harrington. He served as a volunteer firefighter for Cranston Heights Fire Company for many years, becoming a lifetime member. He also served in the US Air Force and Air Guard. Jim was a dedicated employee of Artesian Water for 55 years. He was a lifetime member of the American Water Works Association and the Chesapeake Section. Jim loved his work and took great pride in his accomplishments.
Jim loved to travel and made friends wherever he went. He enjoyed baseball, golf and horseracing, but mostly he enjoyed spending time with his family. He will be remembered for his quick wit and humor, his courage, kindness and generosity. He was a self-less man who took great joy in making people around him happy. He was always willing to help anyone in need. His outgoing personality and positive attitude was an inspiration to many. He touched many lives and will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and anyone who knew him.
Jim was a devoted and loving husband, father, pop-pop and uncle. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marlene (Rajevich); his son, Philip and his wife, Kimberly; his granddaughters and special joys of his life, Erin and Molly; his brother, Harold (Marjorie); his sister-in-law, Judy; and many nieces, nephews and members of his extended family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James; his brother, Raymond; and his sisters, Elizabeth and Florence.
Jim’s family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Delaware Hospice for their excellent care and support; especially Michael, Beverly, Beth, Joele and Linda, and everyone else that expressed acts of kindness and compassion towards Jim during his illness.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, October 24, 2016 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 11:30am. Interment services will be held privately with Jim’s family.
