Sally Avery Allen, age 95,  formerly of Queens NY, passed away peacefully on Monday,  February 6, 2017 in Hockessin, DE.
Sally was born in Smithfield, NC to the late Harrison and Salina (Leach) Avery.
At an early age, she relocated to Brooklyn, NY where she was raised and spent much of her early life. She attended New York City Public Schools and graduated from Girls High School.
In 1946 Sally wed Eli J. Allen Jr. and moved to South Ozone Park in Queens, NY. She was mother to her son, William, and 3 stepchildren, Eli III, Gerald and Loretta.
Sally Attended De Frans Beauty School and became a licensed cosmetologist. She worked in that field for 25 years, retiring for health reasons. She later attended Plaza Business School and worked for The Federation of the Handicapped as an office assistant until her retirement.
She was a long time member of Brooks Memorial United Methodist Church in Jamaica, Queens and was active in many capacities.
Sally relocated to Newark, DE in 2010 to live closer to her family. She lived in Main Towers Senior Housing until moving to Genesis Healthcare, Brackenville Center for health reasons in 2014.
Sally was predeceased by her husband, Eli J. Allen Jr.; her sons, William Avery, Eli Allen III and Gerald Allen; her daughter, Loretta Schoonmaker; and her grandson, Wayne Avery.
She is survived by her daughter in law, Carol Avery; her granddaughter, Crystal Wilson (Roger);  granddaughters, Madinah (Isaiah), Tasneem (Kenny), Maryam, Safiyyah and Raiyaan. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Sally lived by the motto "If I can help someone along the way, I will not have lived in vain."
Sally touched many lives and she will be sorely missed by friends and family alike.
A Memorial for Sally will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 1:00PM at Main Towers Community Room, 330 E. Main St, Newark, DE 19711.
