Guido Paul Camponelli, Sr., 73, of Newark, DE passed away on Wednesday March 22, 2017 at Christiana Hospital.  He was born on September 10, 1943 in Wilmington, DE.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.  His greatest love was his family.

Guido’s entire career was spent in public service.  He began his law enforcement career as a New Castle City police officer for 5 years, followed by employment with the Police Department of the Delaware River and Bay Authority.  After 25 years of service, he retired as a staff sergeant in the Internal Affairs office.  During his tenure there he also served as Vice President of the Federal Credit Union and fire arms instructor.  He was elected to New Castle City Council in 1989 and was appointed Police Commissioner of the New Castle City Police.  

After retiring from the police department he was hired as a Financial Exploitation Investigator for the Delaware Health & Services in their Adult Protective Services Division under a Federal grant.  After the grant expired, he was hired in the Ombudsman Office as an Investigator of Abuse, Neglect, Mistreatment & Financial Exploitation of the elderly in nursing homes.  When the new division of Resident Protection was created he transferred there as an investigator and later became the supervisor of the criminal unit and then transferred back to the Ombudsman Office before he retired.  He took great satisfaction in seeing that the infirmed elderly were protected and justice was served.

Guido graduated from William Penn High School in New Castle, DE.  He attended Saint John the Baptist Church in Newark, DE.  He was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Mary Camponelli.  He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cecelia J. Camponelli of Newark, DE; 3 sons: Guido Paul, Jr. (Dawn), Anthony E. (Deborah), Vincent P. (Jennifer) and 2 grandchildren: Victoria of Smyrna and Vincent Jr. of Middletown.  He is also survived by his brothers, Paul (Nancy) and John (Linda), as well as many extended family members.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 from 10 am – 12:00 pm followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Fr. Arthur B. Fiore at 12:30 pm at Saint Peter’s Catholic Church located at 521 Harmony St., New Castle, DE 19720. Burial will be in the adjacent cemetery immediately following.
