Wallace S. Brohawn Jr.

Wallace S. Brohawn Jr., affectionately known as “Wally,” of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at the age of 83, following a courageous battle with COPD.

Born on October 26, 1942, in Cambridge, Maryland, Wally lived a life defined by hard work, loyalty, humor, and an unwavering devotion to his family.

Wally proudly served in the United States Navy from 1962 to 1966 as a helicopter sonar technician with Helicopter Squadron HS-6 in Chula Vista, California. During his service, he participated in the Pacific recovery operations for astronaut Leroy Gordon Cooper following NASA’s historic Faith 7 Project Mercury mission.

After returning home, Wally dedicated nearly 40 years to the trade he loved as a proud member of UA Local 74. Pipefitting wasn’t just a career—it was his passion. Even in the final weeks of his life, he spoke about how much he missed the work and the lifelong friendships he built along the way. Known as a respected foreman, he earned the admiration of those who worked beside him through his honesty, leadership, and unmistakable sense of humor.

More than anything, Wally was devoted to his family. He shared 63 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Rose, and together they built a life centered around love, laughter, and family. He worked tirelessly to provide opportunities and lasting memories for his sons, Steve and Jeff, from annual family vacations to Ocean City, Disney World, Busch Gardens, and Colonial Williamsburg, to coaching youth baseball and spending years as an umpire. He also loved to golf. His greatest joy was simply being with the people he loved.

An avid Philadelphia sports fan, Wally never missed an opportunity to cheer on the Eagles and Phillies—usually while passionately coaching the game from his living room. He also enjoyed American history, daily walks through the Christiana Mall with Rose, lattes at the Nordstrom Ebar, and the many friendships they made along the way.

Despite the challenges of COPD, Wally faced each day with determination and quiet strength. His resilience reflected the way he lived his entire life.

He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Steven Brohawn; his parents, Wallace S. Brohawn Sr. and Lillian Brohawn; and his brothers, Terry (Linda) and David Brohawn.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Rose (Lewandowski) Brohawn; his son, Jeff Brohawn & Cassidy Henry; his cherished grandchildren, Jordan, Sienna, Bryce, and Stoney; his brother, Michael Brohawn (Paula); his sister, Deborah Winder (Charlie); and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends, and former coworkers.

Wally will be remembered for his strength, honesty, incredible work ethic, quick wit, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the countless memories that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Thursday, July 30 from 2:00 - 3:30PM, immediately followed by a remembrance service.  Interment will be held privately at a later date at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, Delaware.
