Obituary

Thomas Austin Rees, also known to many as “Top Cat" or "Tommy" of Wilmington DE, and Rehoboth Beach, unexpectedly but peacefully passed away, Saturday, May 27, 2023, after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.

He was the son of the late Andrew and Catherine (Lawler) Rees. Tommy, born on February 24, 1943, had many cherished memories of Old New Castle, where he was raised and continued to have lifelong connections. Tommy proudly served in the Delaware Army National Guard and enjoyed a long, fulfilling career with Amtrak, retiring in 2007.

Tommy was a devout Catholic, a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brother, and uncle. His strong values, grounded in his faith and his religious beliefs, were a beautiful example to his family and all who knew him. He faithfully attended Mass daily, was a committed adorer at the Divine Mercy Chapel at St. Ann’s Church, and spread the word of God to all he encountered. He loved his family dearly and was always available to help them. Anytime he was needed, he never hesitated to be there. He enjoyed spending time with his family whether playing games, on vacations, simply reminiscing about his youth, or out celebrating special occasions, he loved to be surrounded by them. He genuinely looked forward to the phone conversations with his sisters and spending time with his brothers who lived in the area and seeing his nieces and nephews. All who crossed his path left laughing and inspired by his colorful limericks and spirit. He had a strong presence and was such a unique character, full of life and love.

Tommy will be dearly missed by his wife, JoAnne M. (Pedicone) Rees; his daughters, Michele M.  Treml (Joseph), Daniele Ferreira (Sid), Renee M. Beamer (Scott); his grandchildren, Meagan Treml, Justin Treml (Julia), Louis Chance III, Julia Ferreira, Brianna Beamer, and McKenzie Beamer.

Tommy has been reunited in Heaven with his siblings, Andrew M. Rees, Jr., and Millicent Rees, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his sister, Geraldine Blackeye; his brother, William Rees; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Tommy’s life at St. Thomas The Apostle Church, 4th St. and Bancroft Pkwy., Wilmington DE 19805 on Monday, June 5 from 9:30-10:45AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM, immediately followed by entombment at Cathedral Cemetery.
