Susan S. Gabriel

Susan S. Gabriel, 78, of Wilmington, North Carolina, formerly of Cranford, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on April 11, 2026 at Lower Cape Fear Life Center.

Born and raised in Trumbull, Connecticut, Susan was a proud graduate of Trumbull High School, Class of 1965. She devoted much of her professional life to caring for others, working for many years as a medical assistant—a role she found deeply fulfilling. In her later years, she continued her commitment to helping those in need as a home health aide.

Susan was a woman of strong faith and community spirit. She was an active member of St. Anne’s Church in Gilbert, Arizona, where she also spent time working in the St. Anne’s Montessori School office. After moving to New Jersey, she became involved with the Cranford Senior Center Club, where she enjoyed weekly socials and bus trips, forming many cherished friendships.

Above all, Susan treasured time spent with her family. She found great joy in sharing meals, laughter, and special moments with her loved ones—especially her grandchildren, who held a special place in her heart.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 36 years, Fred J. Gabriel, who passed away in 2003.

Susan is survived by her devoted daughter, Cheryl McConnell, and her son-in-law, Colin McConnell; her grandson, Vaughn McConnell of Leland, North Carolina; her granddaughter, Carly McConnell of Hoboken, New Jersey; her brothers, David Fowler of Conway, South Carolina, and Greg Fowler of Seymour, Connecticut; along with several nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Rd., Greenville, DE 1987. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
