Stephen P. Gibson, 69, of Newark, Delaware passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving children on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Born in Wilmington on April 5, 1956, he was a son of the late Joseph and Joyce (Stone) Gibson.
Stephen was a graduate of Thomas McKean High School. In August 2022, he retired after a 38-year career with W.L Gore & Associates. Contributions spanned many fulfilling roles in the wire and cable business, starting with his initial commitment as a mechanic/machinist, working his way up to becoming shop leader, with final responsibilities in design engineering. He was often recognized for his hands-on approach and attention to detail. He was committed to the success of the business and forged strong relationships with his fellow associates, developing many life-long friendships in the process.
He enjoyed boating along the Sassafras River and Chesapeake Bay, as well as golf and all types of fishing. As he retired, Stephen was invited to join the Delaware Anglers and Gunners Club where he briefly served in the club’s leadership. In recent years, he returned to the hobby of flying remote-control aircraft and was a proud member of the Silent Knights Soaring Society of Delaware and Raleigh Aeromasters of North Carolina.
During his final year, Stephen lived with great intention, taking several RV camping trips with his children and grandchildren — celebrating life together as a family.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol (Honaker) Gibson, who passed away on February 17, 2017.
Stephen is survived by his children, Matthew Gibson and Crystal Gibson; his cherished granddaughters, Claire and Grace Gibson; his siblings, Nancy Nonne, Brian Gibson (Margie), Michael Gibson (Lori) and Laura Gibson; sister-in-law, Lynette Brown (Josh); several nieces and nephews.
The Gibson Family would like to thank the entire staff at Medical Oncology Hematology Consultants for their expert care over the last several years.
Family and friends are invited to visit at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington on Thursday, February 12, 2026, from 10:00 – 11:15AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30AM. The interment will be held privately at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Cemetery.
