Stanislaw Podsiad

Stanisław (Stanley, Staś) Podsiad, 91, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away July 20, 2026. His devoted family remained by his side to the end and will miss him immensely.

Staś was born in Dzierzbia, Poland.  He was a geography teacher.  After serving in the Polish army, he returned to teaching.  He strongly believed in the power of education.  He immigrated with his parents and siblings to the United States in 1964, settling in Wilmington, Delaware.  He worked at Forbes Steel & Wire Corporation.

Staś was a passionate and gifted gardener.  He tended to his garden with love and care, often sharing the fruits of his labor with family, friends, neighbors and the mailman.  His beautiful garden earned him community gardening awards.  Staś loved watching the rain fall and was a human weathervane. He was an excellent cook and baker. 

Staś was a dedicated member of St. Hedwig Roman Catholic Church where he sang in the choir for over 30 years.  He was a man of deep faith.  He believed in community and helping people whenever possible.

His loyalty and love for Poland remained steadfast.  Staś served as Vice-President of the Council of Polish Organizations and Delaware Division of the Polish American Congress. He also served on the Pulaski Day Parade Committee.  He was a member of AMPOL.  He advocated for Poland’s admittance into NATO.

Staś’s greatest accomplishment and joy was his family.   His love for them was tremendous.  He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Wiesia; his beloved daughters Edyta Ryjewski (Wojciech), Joanna, and Margaret; cherished grandchildren Emilia and Matthew; siblings Mary, Marian, Veronika and Ann; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents Jozefa and Boleslaw and siblings Antoni, Christopher, Jadwiga and Frances.

We are profoundly saddened by this loss. Staś brought so much joy into our lives, and we will love him forever.

Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd, Wilmington, DE 19808, on Friday, July 24, 2026 from 5:00PM-7:00PM.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Hedwig Church, 408 S. Harrison Street, Wilmington, DE 19805 on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at 10:00AM immediately followed by interment at Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Ave, Wilmington, DE 19805.
