Ronald G. Porter

Ronald G. Porter, age 83, of Hockessin, Delaware, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026.

Born on January 10, 1943, in Wilmington, Delaware, Ron was the son of the late George L. and Irene Porter. Among his siblings were Steve Porter, George Porter, and Paul Porter.

Ron attended St. Matthew’s School and Salesianum High School before proudly serving his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from February 1966 to February 1968. He attained the rank of Specialist 4 and earned the Marksman Sharpshooter Qualification Badge. Ron was deeply proud of his service as a Vietnam Veteran and of the campaigns he participated in while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division.

Following his military service, Ron met the love of his life, Rose. They were married in December 1969 and shared more than 56 years of love, devotion, and family life together.

Ron attended Goldey-Beacom College, where he earned a degree in Business Administration. Although he later obtained his real estate license, his true passion was found in the building trades.

From an early age, Ron developed a love for carpentry and woodworking that remained with him throughout his life. He began his career working alongside his father in the family construction business, where he learned the values of hard work, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. His skill and dedication eventually led him to a position with DuPont, where he continued to refine his trade.

Driven by an entrepreneurial spirit, Ron later established himself as an independent contractor, a career he enjoyed for many years until his retirement. Whether remodeling a home, creating custom woodwork, or helping someone solve a construction challenge, Ron took great pride in doing things the right way. He was known for his exceptional workmanship, creativity, and remarkable ability to build or repair just about anything. Family and friends often sought his advice, knowing he would approach every project with patience, precision, and care.

One of Ron’s proudest accomplishments was helping restore the intricate latticework on the Nemours Tower at Nemours Children’s Hospital, a project that beautifully showcased his talent and dedication to preserving fine craftsmanship. He also generously volunteered his time at Nemours, combining his skills with a desire to serve others.

Ron never met a project he wasn't willing to tackle. Whether in his workshop, on a job site, or lending a hand to a friend or neighbor, he found joy and purpose in working with his hands and creating things built to last.

A lifelong member of the American Legion, Ron enjoyed many hobbies, including amateur ham radio operation, woodworking, real estate, and spending time at the beach. He also found great happiness in life's simple pleasures—a scenic drive, a new project, a day by the ocean, and especially sharing a good meal with family and friends. Some of his fondest moments were spent gathered around the table, enjoying conversation, laughter, and the company of those he loved most.

Above all, Ron cherished his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rose Porter; his children, Ronald Porter (Angela) and Megan Lavelle (Andrew); and his four cherished grandchildren, Ryan, Abby, Molly, and Emma.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Monday, July 6, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 901 E. Newport Pike, Wilmington, DE, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held privately.
