Robert J. Touhey, lovingly known as Bob, age 71, passed away suddenly on Friday, July 24, 2020.
Born in Wilmington, DE, Bob was the son of the late William and Gladys (Rohrer) Touhey. He was a graduate of Archmere Academy Class of 1966, where Bob played baseball and football. As a baseball player, Bob was scouted for major league baseball as a pitcher.
After high school, Bob graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and from Oregon State University with a Master Degree in Environmental Engineering. After graduating from Oregon State University, he began his career with the Environmental Protection Agency in Cincinnati, Ohio before becoming the Director of Air and Hazardous Waste for the State of Delaware in Dover. Currently, he was a health, safety and environmental engineer for Croda Chemical.
Family was the center of Bob’s world. He was a loving and nurturing husband and father, who was always planning and looking to the future for the best of the family. Bob enjoyed traveling and skiing with his family. They will never forget their special trips to Disney World and Sanibel Island, where the red tide came in while they were there. He enjoyed international travel with his wife, Donna, especially to Italy, Ireland, Scotland, Spain and Portugal. Many special memories will be treasured from their many skiing trips to Lake Placid and Blue Mountain. Bob also loved the beach and enjoyed trips to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina and spending time in Wildwood Crest, NJ.
In earlier years, Bob was an accomplished actor and singer. He began his journey helping with backstage theater work when his son became interested in theater and his talent blossomed from there. He was active with many local community theater organizations, including The Brandywiners, Delaware Children’s Theatre and the Chapel Street Players. One of his favorite roles was as Grandpa Joe for the show, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, at the Delaware Children’s Theatre.
In his leisure time, Bob was an avid Baltimore Colts and Orioles fan. He also enjoyed going to happy hour with Donna in Wildwood and eating raw clams and oysters on the half shell and drinking a cold beer.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Donna C. (Chupko) Touhey and his sons, Ryan and Kevin Touhey. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Jack Touhey.
