Robert L. Hitchens, age 91, passed away on Friday, August 12, 2022, with his daughters by his side.
Bob was born in Wilmington, one of nine children of the late Thomas and Esther (Burns) Hitchens. He was a graduate of Conrad High School; served honorably in the US Air Force; and enjoyed a long and successful career as a computer programmer for Chrysler. Upon retirement, Bob and his late wife of 56 years, Louise (Goff) relocated to Naples, Florida where they enjoyed 20-plus years, until her passing in 2017.
Bob was an avid sports fan, especially of the Phillies and Eagles; he enjoyed boating and spending time in Pot-Nets; and loved to travel around the country with Louise.
He is survived by his daughters, Kathleen DiRocco (Matthew) and Sharon Russell (Stephen Sagan); his grandchildren, Tara Gryan (Brad), Jimmy Russell (Megan), Matthew DiRocco (Erica), Nicole Jornlin (Michael), Robert DiRocco (Logan) and Brianna Russell; his 12 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Donald, James, Joan, and Rosalie Hitchens, and Patricia Hearn.
In addition to his parents and wife, Bob was preceded in death by his brothers, George, Paul, and Thomas; and his son-in-law, James Russell, Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00pm on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10:00am. Interment will be held in All Saints Cemetery.
