Richard D. Sanderson, 68, of Landenberg, Pennsylvania peacefully passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
Rick was born in Wilmington on January 22, 1958. He has fond memories of growing up in Canby Park before moving to Newark. He graduated from St. Mark’s High School in 1976, where he excelled as a student athlete playing football and baseball. He earned his college degree and MBA from the University of Delaware and was a proud member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity which gave him lifelong friends.
Rick enjoyed his career as a CPA, watching sports, playing golf, and tailgating at UD football games. He also loved the camaraderie and special friendships of his softball teams throughout the years. Rick always looked forward to yearly family vacations, especially at Bethany Beach. He will be remembered as a kind and generous man, who deeply loved his family and being a father to his four girls.
Rick will be dearly missed by his wife of 42 years, Lisa (Mulhare) Sanderson; his daughters, Laura Benfield and husband, Colin, Kerry Sanderson, Julie Sanderson, Christie Filepas and husband, Zander; his beloved grandchildren, Sophia, Charlie and Lucy Benfield. Rick is also survived by his mother, Patricia (Kalafut) Sanderson; his brother, Michael Sanderson and wife, Lisa; his sisters, Kathleen Yearsley and husband, Ed, Susan Rock and husband, Tim.
He was predeceased by his father, Gerald Sanderson.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Wednesday, July 8 from 4:00 – 7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin on Thursday, July 9 at 1:00PM, immediately followed by interment at All Saints Cemetery.
