Rhys James Newcombe, 26, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away tragically on April 23, 2026, in a car accident.
Born on September 28, 1999, and raised in Wilmington, Rhys lived a life marked by passion, talent, and a genuine love for the world around him. He was the beloved son of Lee Tevebaugh and Andy Newcombe, and a proud and devoted older brother to Graeme and Gavin.
Rhys graduated from the Charter School of Wilmington and went on to attend the University of Delaware, earning his BS in Medical Diagnostics. From a very young age, his intelligence, work ethic, and natural curiosity set him apart as a student. In his professional life, he was equally respected and beloved by his employers and coworkers, who valued not only his dedication but also his exuberance and loyalty.
A gifted athlete, Rhys was an outstanding soccer player whose competitiveness was matched by his sportsmanship, leadership on the field, and love of the game. When it came to watching his younger brothers play, he was often the most vocal supporter in the stands. Beyond the field, he found joy and peace in the outdoors. He loved hiking and immersing himself in nature, always seeking out new trails and quiet moments outside, often shared with the family’s Labrador Retriever, Bailey.
Rhys brought that same creativity and energy into every part of his life. In the kitchen, he was inventive and enthusiastic, exploring new ideas and sharing his passion for healthy living and nutrition. He loved putting his own touch on favorite family recipes. He was dedicated to exercise and strength training, frequently designing workouts tailored for his brothers and friends. Rhys was also a talented musical artist and producer, who found both expression and connection through his love of music.
Rhys was a gentle giant with the softest heart. To know Rhys was to love Rhys. He formed deep, lasting connections with people of all ages and from all walks of life. He spent many hours with his grandparents, lending a helping hand and providing loving companionship. He had a beautiful way of making everyone feel welcomed, valued, loved, and at ease.
In addition to his parents and brothers, Rhys is survived by his grandparents, Barbara and Jim Tevebaugh; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends who will carry his memory forward. Rhys had an especially close relationship with his Uncle David and cousin Sophia.
A celebration of Rhys’s life will be held in June. His life, though far too short, was filled with meaning; and his legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him.
