Rebecca C. Blakemore, age 78, of Hockessin, DE, passed away peacefully at home on April 10, 2025, after a well-fought battle with pancreatic cancer.
Becky, as she was known to everyone, was born in Newport News, VA on August 31, 1946; the only child of the late Fred and Mabel Cash.
Becky grew up in Newport News, graduating from Newport News High School in 1964, where she was very involved in the school’s musical activities. In the lower grades, she sang in the school’s choirs, as well as the all-state choir. In her senior year, she served as senior choir accompanist. She was voted most talented girl in the graduating class and inducted into the National Honor Society.
Following her high school graduation, she attended the University of Mary Washington for two years before marrying her high school sweetheart, Colin Blakemore, in 1966. The couple moved around a few times because of Colin’s VMI commission in the Army, but they finally settled in Wilmington, DE where Colin worked for DuPont and Ametek.
Taking what was probably the biggest step of her life, Becky decided in 1982, at the age of 36, to return to college and finish getting her music education degree. With her hard work and encouragement from her husband, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from West Chester University. While there, she was inducted into Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Kappa Lambda, two honor societies in music education.
Following graduation, she briefly taught elementary school music in the Red Clay School District, but she decided she’d be much happier teaching in her own early childhood music business, “B Sharp Kindermusik”, as well as teaching piano at her home.
Becky is survived by her two sons, Owen and Darren (Shannon); and two grandchildren, Wesley and Addison. Becky’s husband of 54 years, Colin, passed away in 2020 due to complications of a stroke.
During her life she loved to garden, play games, read a good book, and, of course, play the piano. Becky and Colin both loved to travel and went to many wonderful places all over the world. Becky was a longtime active member of White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, where she served in many capacities.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 15 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, DE, where a Memorial Service will be offered at 11 am. Interment will be held privately at a later date in Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, 15 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, DE 19711.
