Patricia Sue (Chipley) Newman

Patricia Sue Chipley Newman, 77, of Newark, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, after a lengthy illness.  

Pat was born on December 13, 1948, and grew up in Troy, Ohio. She attended The Ohio State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After marrying her husband, Craig, the couple moved to Delaware. Pat began her career as a public health nurse before stepping away to raise her family. After devoting her time to raising children and countless volunteer activities, Pat returned to her nursing career as a school nurse for 20 years in the Colonial School District.

Pat’s purpose in life  was to take care of others. She was always available to help a sick family member or answer a health question. Pat loved hosting family dinners and gathering everyone for several group photos to capture the day. She always made sure that there were plenty of activities at every event and kept toys and games for the grandchildren to cherish when they visited.      

Beyond her vocation and family, Pat served others through many volunteer roles. She was a Sunday school teacher at Our Lady of Fatima, a Girl Scout leader for Brownie troop 874, and PTA president at Pleasantville Elementary School. Pat loved attending her children's and grandchildren's activities, and she supported many of those organizations even after their involvement ended because she valued the educational experiences they provided.

A devoted football fan, Pat proudly cheered for her beloved Ohio State Buckeyes, and neither snow, rain, nor heat would keep Pat and Craig away from watching a Newark High or University of Delaware football game from the stands.  

Pat is survived by her husband of 54 years, Craig; daughters, Christine (Bill) and Kimberly (Jason); grandchildren, Bridget, Natalie, Lily, Charlotte, and Jackson; and her sister, Bonnie. She is preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Martha; and her sister, Michele.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Monday, July 20, 2026, at St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707, where family and friends may visit beginning at 10:00am. Interment will be held in All Saint’s Cemetery.

To honor Pat’s generous spirit, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the American Lung Association.
