Norman Townsend Obituary

Norman D. Townsend Jr., 72, of Myrtle Beach, SC passed away suddenly on October 14, 2021. He was born in Wilmington, DE to the late Norman D. Townsend Sr. and Marie Townsend (Ferretti). He attended Dickinson High School and proudly served in the  Marine Corp during the Vietnam War and then as a Wilmington City Police Officer. He then enjoyed a thirty-year career as an insurance professional with Nationwide Insurance. His family lived in Wilmington until 1981 and for the next forty years they also resided in Columbus OH, Longmeadow MA, Monroe CT, Agawam MA, Middletown DE, finally settling in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Norman was an avid sports fan and history buff; enjoyed a nice cup of coffee; going shopping with his wife, Joyce; and spending time at the beach. He cherished the memories created with his family and friends, and always made time for good and thoughtful conversation. His wisdom and wit were an inspiration to those who knew him best. He will be dearly missed.

Norman is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of fifty years, Joyce (Edwards) Townsend, originally of Wilmington as well. His children, Angela Marsh and husband Joe of Columbia, CT; Norman D. Townsend III of Baltimore, MD; and Lindsey M. Townsend of Delaware. Grandchildren Camryn, Colby, Liam and Brady. Siblings David Townsend, Donna Paoli, Craig Townsend, Frank Townsend.  Numerous extended family and cousins he loved dearly.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Sunday, October 24, 2021, from 2:00 - 4:00pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00am on Monday, October 25, 2021, at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
