MaryTherese McGovern passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, October 14, 2025 at Christiana Hospital.
MaryTherese, 85 years young, was predeceased by her brothers Barney and Jimmy. She is survived by her brother Philip McGovern; Jimmy’s sons: her nephew Brandon and his wife Dana and their children James and Ashleigh, her nephew Damien and his wife Kelly and their children Brady, Griffin and Reagan; Barney’s children: her niece Megan, her niece Julie and her sons Connor, Dan and Griffin, her nephew Daniel and his wife Annabel and their son Michael and Dan’s daughter Sophia, her nephew Ted and his children Sam and Jack.
MaryTherese graduated from Ursuline Academy and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilmington College in 1976. She was a career educator and teacher for the Diocese of Wilmington at St Ann’s, Our Lady of Fatima, St John the Beloved, and St Anthony of Padua. She also taught for the Diocese in Margate, New Jersey.
She was a proud member of Delaware Teachers of Science, creating a science curriculum with her friend Sue Rice for the Diocese of Wilmington. MaryTherese loved all her students, wanting only the best for all of them.
MaryTherese loved her family and will be missed very much as a sister, aunt and cousin, and family historian. In early years she loved playing tennis, traveling through the area favorite places to visit Longwood Gardens and Old New Castle.
We love you and miss you MaryTherese but are comforted that you will be with Mom and your brothers.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Wednesday, October 29 from 10:00 – 11:00AM, with a Catholic funeral service immediately following. Interment will be held privately.
