Mary D. Julian, age 91, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025 at Coral Springs Nursing Home.
Mary was a lifelong Delaware resident, born in Wilmington, DE on August 13th, 1933, the daughter of Edward F Bachman and Vivian (Buchanan) Bachman, Mary was the youngest of seven children. She attended Marshallton Consolidated School and Henry C. Conrad High School.
She was active in the Marshallton School PTA, and later went on to serve as president of the New Castle County School Board. She was responsible for implementing the court-ordered county de-segregation plan of 1979, merging several smaller districts into the 4 large districts that currently exist.
In the mid-1970’s, Mary began a career in real estate, where within 1 year, she became manager of B. Gary Scott. Over the next 40+ years she continued to thrive in the real estate industry, managing other prominent firms including Patterson-Schwartz and Prudential Fox & Roach of Hockessin. Known for her creative problem-solving skills and ability to think outside the box, Mary earned respect from colleagues and clients alike.
She was known for her vibrant personality, quick wit, and sense of humor. Mary loved being surrounded by family and friends. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. A born leader who touched countless lives, she will be missed by many.
Mary was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Paul Julian; her first husband, Amedio DiVirgilio; her son, John DiVirgilio; three brothers, Harold Bockman, Edward Bachman, and Carlton Bachman; and three sisters, Christine Burton, Vivian Penrose, and Juliette Swann.
She is survived by her son, Raymond DiVirgilio; her stepchildren, Joanna Newcomer, Rebecca Julian, Mark Julian, and Paul Julian Jr.; three grandchildren, Chelsi Carter, Sam Newcomer and Emily Newcomer; and great-granddaughter, Maddie Carter.
May Mary’s memory bring comfort to those who know her and joy to those that remember her.
A funeral service will be celebrated at 10:30am on Wednesday, July 23, 2025 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 9:30am. Interment will be held in All Saints Cemetery.
