Maria Salve Rose was a talented artist, educator, chef, and creative soul. Born in Dover in 1965 to parents James and Jean Salve, she was the oldest of her siblings, and grew up supported by a large family in northern DE and southern PA. Maria was always drawn to the beach, and relocated to Rehoboth where she learned the restaurant business at The Back Porch Cafe and Chez la Mer. Her passion for fine dining sent Maria to the Napa Valley in California, where she established herself as a Chef & Event Coordinator for Knickerbockers Catering. It was at a catered event in May of 1991 at Chateau Montelena Winery that Maria met Mitch Rose. Their relationship grew, and after they started working for the Kimpton Group, by 1994, they moved into apartment together on Nob Hill in San Francisco. Maria and Mitch fell in love with each other and the city by the bay, commuting by cable car, walking along Ocean Beach, and going to new restaurant openings and art exhibitions. They were married in September of 1999.
In 2000, their eldest child, Soren, was born, and shortly after, in 2001 they moved back East. In 2004 they had a second child, Vincent. For ten years, Maria homeschooled her children full-time and was an integral part of the local Delaware/Pennsylvania/Maryland homeschooling community. Maria found immense joy in biking or rambling through State Parks across the Northeast, seeing her children graduate and become outstanding adults, continuing to cook amazing dishes, and creating fine art and jewelry.
Maria was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2021. She suffered more than was necessary near the end of her care, like many patients across America, due to ongoing shortages of chemotherapy drugs.
Maria died in the comfort of our home on November 28th, 2023. She is survived by her mother, Jean Salve; her husband of 24 years, Mitch Rose; her children, Soren and Vincent Rose; her sister, Ann Neilson; and her brother, Jim Salve.
A memorial will be held in Lewes, DE on April 28, 2024. Details regarding time and location will be communicated privately to family and friends.
