Louis Moscato Obituary

Louis G. Moscato, born on October 22, 1913 in Port Chester, NY, died December 14, 2020 in Wilmington, DE, at the age of 107 and 52 days.

Lou (known as Pop, PopPop, or Poppio to family) was the oldest of three children of Gaetano and Maria Moscato. His father emigrated from Castellaneta, Italy and was a classmate of Rudolph Valentino. Lou, who took after his father in appearance, always claimed that Hollywood chose the wrong guy and missed out on his father’s dapper good looks.

Lou told many stories about growing up in New York City, the proud birthplace of his mother Maria, and how he met the love of his life Laura (née Larkin) when she was visiting the city from South Dakota. Lou and Laura married in 1943 while he was on leave from the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1954, with four children and one on the way, the family moved out of their cozy one-bedroom Bronx apartment to a house in New Jersey. Lou continued to work in New York City as an accountant.

The family moved to Wilmington in 1970 where Lou and Laura became founding members of Resurrection Catholic Church. After retiring, Lou worked with his son John at his book publishing company. He was very active in Resurrection Parish, attending daily Mass and working as a member of the Finance Committee past his 100th birthday.

Lou loved his family and enjoyed visiting his sons in Las Cruces, NM; Portland, OR; Cedar Grove, NJ; and his daughter in St. Paul, MN. Thanks to his son, Robert, he was able to live in his own home until 104 at which time he moved into The Summit, an assisted living facility.

Lou was preceded in death by his wife Laura, granddaughter Laura, and daughter Miriam. He is survived by his four sons: Louis, Robert, John, and Michael; eleven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. All with whom he enjoyed comparing his tanned arms next to their pallor complexions while sporting a cheeky smile.

Lou had a contagious zest for life and concluded most days with happy hour and a drink of good Scotch whisky. His understated manner, positive outlook, and tacit wisdom benefited all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 21 at Resurrection Parish, 3000 Videre Dr., Wilmington, DE 19808. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery.
