Leslie J. Moore, age 77, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 27, 2026, after a long illness, with his beloved wife, Barbara, and his sister, Eileen, by his side.
Born in Wilmington on June 17, 1949, Leslie was the son of the late William and Rita (Manley) Moore. A true Wilmington native, he was born, raised, and spent his entire life in the city he proudly called home. He graduated from Thomas McKean High School and attended Goldey Beacom College before beginning a long and rewarding career as a pipefitter with Pipefitters Local 80. Throughout his career, Les earned the respect of his coworkers and developed many lifelong friendships through his dedication, hard work, and good nature.
Above all else, Les was a devoted husband and father. He always put his "girls" first, encouraging and supporting them every step of the way as they grew into the strong, independent women he was so proud to call his daughters.
Les took tremendous pride in his home and could often be found working around the house, tending to the yard, or caring for the family pool. When he wasn't busy with home projects, he enjoyed betting the horses at Delaware Park, a pastime he had loved since he was a teenager. Even after he was no longer physically able to visit the track, he continued following the races and placing his bets from home on his laptop. An avid walker, Les faithfully walked eight miles a day for many years until his health no longer allowed him to continue.
A proud and active member of the Montclare community, Les was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors whenever they needed it. His kindness, generosity, and willingness to help earned him the affectionate nickname, the "Mayor of Montclare."
In addition to his parents, Les was preceded in death by his sister, Rita Cox.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 43 wonderful years, Barbara A. (Jones) Moore; his daughters, Andy Sue Moore and Amy Moore, both of Wilmington, Delaware; his sisters, Eileen Cousineau of Arizona and Suzanne Wood of Wilmington, Delaware; his brothers-in-law, Mike Jones (Susan) of South Dakota and Butch Jones (Jo Ellen) of Ocean View, Delaware; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and neighbors who will forever cherish his memory.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and nurses of Christiana Care and Delaware Hospice for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Les and his family throughout his illness.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Thursday, August 6, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where a funeral service will begin at 12:30 p.m.
