Kevin R. Murphy, age 65, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, February 16, 2021.
Kevin was born and raised in Wilmington and graduated from St. Elizabeth’s High School in 1973. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 18 years but always had a desire to become a police officer. In October of 1990 he started working for the New Castle County Department of Public Safety. He graduated from the police academy in April of 1991. He served the department for 20 years, 15 of those years working in the Evidence Detection Unit. He retired as a police officer in 2010 and continued his law enforcement career as a latent fingerprint examiner with the same department.
He enjoyed spending time with his family especially with his grandson, Brandon. He also enjoyed vacationing in Murrell’s Inlet, South Carolina every year. He was a fan of the Phillies and the Eagles. He took great pride in his 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am which he recently reconditioned. He was a very generous and loving man who always put others first.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Constance (Mullin) Murphy, his children, Kevin, Michael, Jonathan and Lauren Baker (Dalton), his grandson, Brandon, his sister, Mary Ann Malin (James), his brother, Rev. David F. Murphy and his mother in law, Susanna Mullin. Kevin is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers in law and sisters in law. He was predeceased by his mother, Vivian Fontana Murphy, his father in law, John J. Mullin, Sr, and his brothers in law, Robert J. (Bobby) Mullin and John J. Mullin, Jr.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 23 from 5-8 pm at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, February 24 at 11 am at Holy Family Church, 15 Gender Rd., Newark, DE. Burial will be private.

Services for Kevin will be conducted in accordance with current COVID-19 directives, which require mandatory face masks, social distancing, and occupancy limits at both the funeral home and church. For those not able to attend in person, the Mass will be broadcast live through Kevin’s obituary page on the funeral home website.
