Kathleen “Cookie” M. (Burns) Gland, 80, of Wilmington and Long Neck, Delaware passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones at home on Saturday, February 13, 2021. She was born in Wilmington on April 29, 1940 to the late James and Gertrude (Healy) Burns. In addition to her parents, Cookie was predeceased by her beloved son, Timothy A. Gland in 2015; her brother, James Burns; her sisters, Barbara Brown and Jane Calder.
Cookie will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 62 years, Robert A. Gland; her daughter, Kathy Frey and husband, Gene of Middletown; her son, Robert A. Gland Jr. and wife, Cheryl of Newark; four grandchildren, Brian Frey (Jen), Daria Charles (Kurt), Breanna Pace (CJ) and Robert A. Gland III; seven great grandchildren, with another due in June; along with many nieces and nephews.
Cookie was a member of the first graduating class of Padua Academy in 1958. She was the Executive Director for Oak Grove Senior Center for 35 years, always ensuring the seniors in the area had a place to come, a meal to eat, trips to enjoy, and socialize while playing various games or exercising. She was a kind and friendly person, and enjoyed spending time at the beach with family and friends. Cookie enjoyed reading, as well as meeting new people and talking with them – she always ended up knowing someone they knew or was a member of their family.
Funeral arrangements for Cookie will be conducted in compliance with COVID-19 directives, which require mandatory face masks and social distancing at the church and cemetery.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Elizabeth Church, Cedar and Clayton Streets, Wilmington on Monday, February 22 at 11:00AM, immediately followed by interment in All Saints Cemetery.
The viewing will be held privately.
