Karen (Krakowski) Grandell, age 56, of Wilmington, DE, passed peacefully on Friday, July 2, 2021 surrounded by loving family and friends as the angels lifted her to Heaven.
Born and raised in the Wilmington area and graduated from John Dickinson High School in 1983. She was voted “funniest” in her class and was a true friend to all. She was an all-star athlete in softball and field hockey. She remained a lifelong athlete, an avid runner competing in local races and finished the Delaware, Miami and the Marine Corp marathons.
Karen was a dedicated teacher and was loved by students and faculty alike. She devoted herself not only to the minds of her students but also to their personal growth. Karen graduated from Delaware State University and pursued her Masters in Education through the University of Delaware. Karen’s professional career started with teaching at the North Elementary School for 3 years before taking time off to raise her daughter. She returned to teaching in 2003 for the Wilmington Montessori School and then for a short time with the Philadelphia Public School district, and then finally retiring in 2019 from First State Montessori School.
Karen was a loving mother, enjoyed the outdoors and spending time at the beach. She was an excellent corn hole, card, yahtzee and pictionary player and of course, a diehard Eagles fan! She will mostly be remembered for her amazing vocal talents singing “God Bless America” and yearly “Happy Birthday” renditions to her closest friends.
Karen’s faith, spirituality and connection with God, guided her all through life. Her love and grace was a gift to all who knew her. She was a true friend for so many and will be cherished in our hearts forever.
Karen will be deeply missed by her two children, Hannah Grandell and Peter Grandell, her mother, Patricia Pierson (Lee), brothers, Timothy Krakowski, Gary Krakowski and James Krakowski, Jr. She is preceded in death by her father, James Krakowski, Sr. in 1989.
A visitation will be held Friday, July 16, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m. at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, Delaware.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 17, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Beloved Roman Catholic Church, 905 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808.
