John F. Spagnolo, Sr. passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2025 at the age of 94. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he was the son of the late Giovanni Spagnolo and Lucia Pretto Spagnolo. John loved all sports, playing semi-pro baseball, softball, Senior Olympics volleyball and was an avid Bocce player in the winter months with the Amherst Cove Team in Naples, Florida. He enlisted and served for 2 years in the Army and was stationed in Panama. John volunteered for many years at St. Anthony’s with the construction of Padua Academy, and multiple jobs at the Italian Festival. He was a graduate of Brown Vocational School and worked and retired from the DuPont Company as a machinist. He also was an instructor at Delcastle Technical School Evening Program.
John was also predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Christine T. (Pierce) Spagnolo; his son, John F. Spagnolo, Jr.; his sisters, Pierina Spagnolo and Justina Spagnolo; and his brother, Francis Spagnolo. He is survived by his daughters and their spouses, Donna and Barry Kintz, Terri and Bob Parker; as well as his sister, Margaret McConnell.
Family and friends may visit at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 9th and Dupont Streets, Wilmington on Wednesday, December 31 from 9:30-10:15AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30AM, followed by entombment at Cathedral Cemetery, 2400 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John may be made to St. Anthony of Padua Church, 901 N. DuPont Street, Wilmington, Delaware 19805.
