John P. Lewis, Sr., 77, of Landenberg, PA, passed away unexpectedly on May 16, 2025. Born to the late John G. (Jack) and Monica (McCann) Lewis, he was raised in Clifton Heights, PA.
A graduate of Cardinal O’Hara High School’s first class in 1966, John began working at Boeing Helicopters just weeks after graduation and built a successful 32-year career, where he rose through the ranks and traveled extensively. Known for his strong work ethic and leadership, he was equally committed to his personal mission of helping others through Alcoholics Anonymous, where he mentored and supported many since he became a member in the 1970s.
John and his beautiful bride Cheryl eloped in 1966, and then they raised their family in Newark, DE, before eventually settling in Landenberg, PA. Despite health challenges later in life, he remained a source of strength and support to those around him. John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 59 years, Cheryl (McGowan) Lewis; his son, Christopher Lewis; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Lewis; and many other cherished family members.
John is survived by his sons, John Lewis Jr., Robert Lewis Sr., and foster son, Brad Lambert; as well as his grandchildren, Ashley (Ben), Bobby, Rachel, Anna, Danielle, Aaron, Tryniti, Mason, and Bentley; and great-grandchildren Cesar, Leighton and Emerald. He is also remembered by his sister, Patti (Larry) Braun; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
A memorial service will be celebrated at 12:00pm on Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 11:00am. Interment will be private.
