John Leo Flanagan, 86, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, December 3, 2025. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Prep High School and St. Joseph’s University, and he was the youngest elected president of the Retail Clerk Union. He then served his country as a member of the United States Army’s 41st Artillery Group. After his honorable discharge from the Army, John had a 35 year career, working for Johnson & Johnson and Astra Zeneca and retired in 2000. He served as the president of the Northern Delaware Soccer Association and the Greater Hockessin Area Development Association. A devoted husband to Joan for 63 years, John enjoyed following his children’s sports and coaching soccer. He will be deeply missed.
Remaining to cherish John’s memory are his spouse, Joan; his children, Kathleen (Imants), John (Lori), Brian (Michelle) and Sheila (Dennis); along with his grandchildren, Cate (Maggie), Kylie, Christina (Ollie), Amanda, Andrew, Lauren, Brendan, Maggie, Brigid and Molly. Preceding John in death are his parents, John and Anna Flanagan; his sister, Anna Egan; and his grandson, Seamus Flanagan.
Family and friends are invited to the visitation at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek on Thursday, December 11 from 5:00 - 7:00PM. An additional visitation will be held at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin on Friday, December 12 from 10:00 - 10:45AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM, immediately followed by interment with military honors at All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.
