It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of John Eugene Engstrom, age 84, of Newark, Delaware, who left us peacefully on December 1, 2023. He left us too soon but will forever remain in our hearts with countless memories.
John was born on September 21, 1939, in Rhode Island to Harry and Mary Engstrom. Having grown up in Rhode Island, John always said he had salt water in his veins. He loved nautical antiques, visiting Oakland Beach, as well as eating clamcakes and chowder. John studied Geology at the University of Rhode Island (URI) and was a proud member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Upon graduation from URI he was hired by IBM as a systems engineer, and he subsequently achieved great success with an award-winning career in software and technology sales. Throughout his career, he was recognized for going above and beyond as a leader and manager. After John retired, he turned his antiquing hobby into a thriving business. Many know him as The Old Pacrat. John was also an avid bowler, and he proudly bowled in the Delaware Senior Olympics, taking home many medals over the years including gold and silver.
It is through his love of antiques that he met the one true love of his life, Elaine. Their love is one that only the lucky few ever get to experience, and they had 18 wonderful years together as partners in life, business, and bowling. Together, they are The Old Pacrats.
John will be cherished forever by his spouse, Elaine Flint (Engstrom); children, Jay Engstrom and Laurie Engstrom Girardi; siblings, Jim Engstrom and his wife, Sally Engstrom; and the joys of his life, grandchildren Jack A. Girardi and Anna G. Girardi. He also leaves behind a circle of close friends throughout the antique and bowling communities.
A Celebration of Life in honor of John will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. Visitation will be held from 9:30 am to 10:45 am, and the service will follow at 11 am.
In lieu of sending flowers, we invite you to make a donation to Faithful Friends Animal Society, 165 Airport Road, New Castle, DE 19720, as a tribute to John's life and legacy and his beloved cats, Mittens and Buddy.
