John J. Dumel

John James Dumel “Pou”, age 94, died in his home on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. He was born in Marcus Hook, PA on August 8, 1930. When his family moved to Wilmington, Delaware, John attended Warner Junior High. His father owned the Blue Hen Restaurant. John worked part-time while attending P.S. duPont High School and graduated in 1949. He was drafted during this time and sent to Austria with the 101st Air Borne for 2 years during the Korean War. John always had an interest in water color painting. After retiring from working for Prudential for 32 years, he started taking lessons from Jean Lanyon. He sold many paintings over the years. He loved sand fishing, his beach house in Ocean City, New Jersey, and spending the winters in Naples, Florida.

John was predeceased by his parents, Olympia and James Dumel; and siblings, Theodora Spithas, Crystal Apotas, Mary Molls and Lou Dumel. John is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Evangeline “Angie” (Maskas) Dumel “Yaya”; daughters, Alexandra Strab (Jim) and Linda Pollinger; granddaughters, Julie Watkins (Jeremy), Christen Majewicz (Nic), Sierra Falkowski, and Kali Falkowski; great-grandchildren, Max, Lily, Alex, David, Braelyn, Titus, Carter, and Mya; niece Kiki Spithas; and granddog, Lacy Lou.

Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, June 10 from 10:30 – 11:15AM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 808 North Broom Street, Wilmington, Delaware 19806, where John and his wife were members. A liturgy will follow at 11:30AM. After the service, he will be buried at Silverbrook Cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Avenue, Wilmington, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
