John Betz passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on September 13, 2023 at the age of 89.
John was born on September 23, 1933 in Trainer, Pennsylvania, and served in the Navy as a Gunner’s Mate First Class. John shared many fond memories of his travels to ports around the world, including the South Pole. In 1956 he moved to Delaware and married Loretta (Kempczynski); they had two daughters and shared over 50 wonderful years of marriage together.
John began a forty year career as a machinist at the Speakman Company. He also owned and operated John’s Discount for over fifty years, an appliance store in the Hedgeville section of Wilmington. John was an inventor and was always thinking of new ideas, especially in the field of plumbing. He held two U.S Patents, an accomplishment of which he was very proud.
John enjoyed spending time fishing, crabbing, or just relaxing with family at his Rehoboth beach house. He cherished the moments he shared with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at the beach.
John fought a courageous battle with cancer for several years with optimism and perseverance. He was a true inspiration to all for his love of family, faith, and a steadfast work ethic.
John was predeceased by his parents Rose and Isadore Betz; his wife, Loretta; his brother, Francis; and sister, Rosemarie.
He is survived by his daughters, Joan Holveck (Kevin) and Lynda Lord (Elliot); granddaughters, Julie Barnes (Carmen), Jennifer Shellem (Tyler), Alison Lord-Pannoni (Jon), Lexi Lord(Cam) and Kaitlin Lord (Joel); and six great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to the visitation at St. Hedwig’s Church 408 S. Harrison Street, Wilmington DE 19805 on Friday, September 22 from 9:30 to 10:45 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John may be made to St. Hedwig’s Church, 408 S. Harrison Street, Wilmington, DE 19805.
