Joan R. Berl of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully at her home on February 20, 2025.
She was born on the 4th of July, 1933, the daughter of John C. Roman and Margaret (Beck) Roman and raised in New Castle, DE. After graduating from William Penn High School, she attended the University of Delaware, where she met her loving husband of 65 years, the late Richard E. Berl.
Being born on Independence Day, Joan identified with all things Americana, especially if it was red, white and blue — from the art on the walls to the carpet on the floor to the shirt on her back. She actively supported her Penn Acres community, including PTAs and swim teams, and volunteered her time generously at Our Lady of Fatima Church. She passed along her love for Christmas and enjoyed annual summer vacations in Rehoboth Beach at 31 Virginia Avenue.
But more than anything else, she was known best for her kindness and lifelong joy of caring for others. She embraced her role as homemaker like you wouldn't believe, filling Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop's cozy center hall colonial with every type of childhood fun imaginable; the more family, and the more chaotic, the better.
Joan is survived by her 5 children, Richard E. Berl, Jr. (Sheree), Sharon Robinson, Michael Berl (Trinda), Kenneth Berl (Meghann) and Kimberly Berl; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard E. Berl; son-in-law, Jeffrey E. Robinson; and granddaughter, Andrea M. Robinson.
The family extends our heartfelt thanks to the incredible staff at Rockland Place for their compassionate care and support.
Visitation will be held at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Rd., Greenville, DE on Monday, March 3rd, 2025 from 10-11 a.m., where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Interment to follow in the adjoining cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meals On Wheels Delaware (mealsonwheelsde.org).
