Jesse David Hatfield, affectionately known to many as "Dave" and "Hooter," age 70, of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 13, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Dave was the beloved son of the late Oscar and Faye Hatfield, whom he loved dearly throughout his life.
Dave shared a remarkable love story with his wife, best friend, and soulmate, Jane (Fitzgerald) Hatfield. Their bond was the foundation of a life filled with laughter, devotion, and unwavering support. He often said he could not imagine life without Jane, and their love was evident to all who knew them.
Dave's greatest pride was his family. He leaves behind a legacy through his three sons: Jesse David Hatfield II (Lyndsey), whose exceptional carpentry and craftsmanship reflect the skills and work ethic his father instilled in him; Kyle Paul Hatfield, whose courage, compassion, and intelligence serve him well as a Medical ICU nurse and advocate for others; and Zachary Joseph Hatfield, who embodies the gentle heart and kindness that Dave carried throughout his life. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to Elias Anderson Hatfield and John Benjamin Maybrey V, who brought him endless joy.
In addition to his wife, sons, and grandchildren, Dave is survived by his four siblings: his twin sister, Diane (Raul), Linda (Joe), Kimberly, and Danny. He is also survived by his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Joe (Sharon), Monica (Jimbo), Kathleen (Mike), Colleen, Jimmy (Holly), Jake, and Donna, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
A 1973 graduate of DelCastle Technical High School, Dave continued his education at Delaware Technical Community College. A talented carpenter by trade, he built a successful career before becoming a Safety Health Manager for Bancroft Construction Company. Following his retirement, he found great happiness working as a lawn maintenance technician at Ed "Porky" Oliver Golf Club, where he enjoyed being outdoors, caring for the grounds, and socializing with the many friends he made there.
Dave lived an active and engaged life. A gifted athlete, he was an All-State basketball player and Flight B Basketball Scoring Champion. He was a member of the Stapler Athletic Association and enjoyed playing Stapler Softball. Throughout the years, he generously volunteered his time as a DMA basketball coach, St. Matthew's basketball and tee-ball coach, Boy Scout leader, and active member of Youth Activities Committee (YAC) at St. Matthew's, where he also managed the gym. He was also a member of ABC, DCA, and Ed Oliver Golf Club.
When he wasn't working or volunteering, Dave enjoyed fishing, woodworking, golfing, gardening and spending time outdoors. Above all else, he cherished time with his family. He had an incredible sense of humor, a generous spirit, and a natural ability to make others feel welcome. Dave was always willing to put others before himself and was deeply loved by everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Though his family will miss him dearly, they find comfort knowing that Dave rests in peace and that his wife he cherished so deeply is surrounded by the love and protection of the three sons he raised so well.
The family will be forever grateful to the Christiana Care nurses and patient care techs on the Pulmonary Transitional Unit (3D) and the Hematology/Oncology Unit (6E) for their endless love and support.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, DE 19807. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m.
