Jeri N. Whitney, age 71, of Newark, Delaware, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 8, 2025, with her sons by her side.
Born in Wilmington to the late Gerald and Vera (Zabenko) Griest, Jeri was a proud graduate of McKean High School. Throughout her life, she wore many hats—working as a cosmetologist and later spending time at DuPont—but it was later in life that she truly found her calling as a Licensed Practical Nurse. Her work in hospice care with Heartland and Compassionate Care Hospice was more than a profession; it was a reflection of her generous heart. Jeri poured love and compassion into every patient she served, bringing comfort and dignity to those in their final moments. Nursing brought her great pride, purpose, and joy.
Jeri had a deep love for the beach and spent many cherished summers by the water. Her second home at Mariner’s Cove, with its peaceful canal and pontoon boat just outside her back door, was a place of solace and happiness. She cherished time with friends and family, especially when gathered around a table of freshly steamed crabs by the water.
A talented cook, Jeri found joy in the kitchen and took pride in preparing meals for those she loved. Her cookbook collection, which filled shelves and cupboards, reflected her adventurous spirit and love of good food. Whether trying a new recipe or perfecting a family favorite, cooking was one of the many ways she expressed her care and creativity.
Jeri was also a lifelong animal lover, especially fond of dogs and cats. Her gentle nature and kind heart extended to the furry companions who brought joy and comfort to her life.
Above all, Jeri’s greatest joy came from her family. She was a devoted mother, a loving sister, and a proud grandmother to eight grandchildren who adored her. Her warmth, laughter, and unwavering support will be remembered always.
She is survived by her sons, Michael (Jessica), Nicholas (Tiffany), and Christopher (Kimberly); her beloved grandchildren: Juliette, Madison, Ryan, Kaitlyn, Charlotte, Jake, Everly, and Olivia; her brothers, David Griest and Bill Griest; her sister, Karen Blum; and many loving members of her extended family.
Jeri was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Whitney, in 2022.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses and staff of AccentCare Hospice for their care and compassion.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808. Family and friends may visit beginning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jeri’s memory may be made to the Seasons Hospice Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
