James P. Todd, Sr.

James P. Todd, Sr., age 93, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

He was born in Boston, MA, son of the late Dr. John and Barbara (Feeney) Todd. Jim was a graduate of St. Sebastian’s Prep School and Boston College (B.A.54) (M.Ed.56). In 1956 Jim found the love of his life Rita Marie Boland, commencing in marriage that would last more than 63 years. He was then commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the United States Air Force, stationed at Warren AFB Cheyene, Wyoming. Upon completion of his active duty, he moved to DE with his beloved wife, Rita, continuing to serve as an active reservist until his honorable discharge in 1962.

In Delaware, Jim pursued a career in education that lasted more than 30 years. He held various teaching and counseling positions in the De La Warr and Appoquinimink School districts, all while completing a second master’s degree from the University of Delaware (M.Ed.62). Jim pioneered the Special Education program at the Appoquinimink school district concluding his teaching career as the district’s lead psychometrist. He then “accidentally” started a second career with Acme Supermarkets. He was an original store member of Acme Suburban Plaza when it opened in 1992 and retired after 10 years.

Jim was an accomplished landscaper and conversationalist. He enjoyed gardening, traveling with his wife; movies, music, spending time with his family; and sharing his thoughts. He was also an American Red Cross 55-gallon blood donor.

He is survived by his sons, John (Debbie), Joe, and Jerry (TressAnn); his grandchildren, Katie (Charles), Carly (Scott), Brian (Irina), Erin, Jenni, Emily (PO-1 Isaac) and PO-1 Stephen; his great-grandchildren, James and Grace; and his brother, Owen.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his cherished wife Rita in 2019; his sons, Mark and Jim, Jr.; and his brother, David.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00PM on Thursday, August 7 at Holy Family Church, 15 Gender Road, Newark, DE 19713, where family and friends may visit beginning at 11:00AM.  Interment will be held in All Saints Cemetery.
