James Sheridan Merritt

James Sheridan Merritt, Jr. of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Wednesday, May 17, 2023 surrounded by his loving family.  He was 68 years old and died after a brief illness.

Jim was born and raised in Wilmington, son of the late Catherine Stevens Merritt and James Sheridan and was a 1973 graduate of John Dickinson High School.  He worked as a field engineer for Kodak and a system engineer for Danka Industries Inc. and recently retired from Konica Minolta as a regional systems analyst.

Jim was involved in the New Castle County Football League and spent many years as a coach, manager and president of the program. He enjoyed working with electronics and updating his home with the latest and greatest gadgets.  Jim loved to share his knowledge and talent with anyone. He was a devoted family man who enjoyed spending time with his wife, Carol, and his family, especially at the beach. 

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Carol (Permar) Merritt of Wilmington; his children, Michelle Merritt Elston of Fort Mill, SC, Nicholas Merritt (Melanie) of Wilmington; his 5 grandchildren, Aurora, Aron James, Aiden, Lucy, and Levi; brothers, John (Debra), Gregory (Roberta), and Kenneth (Karen);as well as many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be celebrated at 5:00pm on Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808, where family and friends may visit beginning at 4:00pm. Interment will be held privately at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
