James J. Lafferty Jr., age 78, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, September 16, 2023, with his family by his side after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Jim was born in Wilmington, son of the late James J. and Mary (Gardecki) Lafferty. He was a graduate of Salesianum School, attended the University of Delaware and then served in the US Army Reserves. Jim worked at the DuPont Company as an Information Systems Consultant for 27 years. Upon taking early retirement from DuPont, Jim began his second career with the Mental Health Association in Delaware where he worked for 22 years, retiring in 2016 as the Executive Director. Jim touched countless lives through his work at MHA, whether it be through establishing support groups for those suffering from depression; helping an individual understand their loved one’s illness; or tirelessly advocating for better services for those experiencing a mental health condition. Jim received numerous awards throughout his career at MHA and upon his retirement, was honored to be presented with the Order of the First State by Governor Jack Markell. Additionally, Jim served as a Permanent Deacon at St. Ann’s parish for almost 20 years with ministry at Nemours Hospital for Children.
Jim loved bass fishing and could tell you about any pond in the State of Delaware. He loved to tell stories (not just fish tales) and had a great sense of humor. If he were writing this obituary, it would be a lot funnier! He also enjoyed carpentry, photography and cooking. Most of all he loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet (Parvis) Lafferty; his children, Charlotte Shegog (Kevin) and Tim Lafferty (Susan); his grandchildren, Will, Isabelle and Charlie Shegog and Teagan and Emma Lafferty; his brother, John Lafferty; as well as many members of his extended family.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Doherty Funeral Home, 1900 Delaware Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806 on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, from 9:30am-10:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am at St. Ann’s Church, 2013 Gilpin Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806. Interment will be held privately at a later date.
